Andaman Sea considered for World Heritage Site listing
Sea could be considered for listing as a Unesco World Heritage Site if two marine specialists get their way.
The National Reform Committee on Marine and Coastal Resources will before April propose to the Cabinet that the Andaman Sea be nominated for consideration as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Kongkiat Kittiwattanawong, director of the Andaman marine biological centre, said that if Thailand can promote the Andaman Sea as a world heritage treasure, it will show the world that the Kingdom has a stable conservation agenda.
Ismael Bensa-ard, a local marine specialist, said the authorities have to analyse the impact on the people living in the area. The locals will cooperate if the plan isn't detrimental to them, he said, but it would be good if the nation helps protect the country's world heritage destinations.
If the listing comes to pass, the Andaman Sea will become Thailand's sixth listed site and its first marine site. The listing would help support the ecosystem and natural resources as well as supporting tourism and generally add value to the country.
There will be a better economy and society if we have a good ecosystem, which will lead to national stability, Kongkiat said.
