Tourism Langkawi, Malindo Air to launch promotion to lure tourists from Phuket

Tourism Langkawi, a local tourism development organisation, in collaboration with Malindo Air, will launch a promotion to introduce tourism products and hotel accommodation offered by its members, to lure tourists from Phuket to the island, next month.

Langkawi Tourism president Ahmad Phisol Ishak said Malindo Air’s Langkawi-Phuket-Langkawi direct flights had opened up a huge opportunity for the island’s tourism sector as it would ease the travel of visitors.

“Fifteen members of Langkawi Tourism comprising travel agents, hotel and tourism product operators are joining forces with Malindo Air to launch the promotion at Langkawi International Airport on Sept 2.

“We want to take this opportunity to attract more tourists from Phuket. During the launching ceremony, representatives from 10 travel agents and three media organisations in Thailand will also be flown in as part of the promotion.”

He said this when met after chairing a meeting with Malindo Air's North and Central Malaysia manager Arasu Soundarajan and members of Tourism Langkawi at Ombak Villa Langkawi here today.

Ahmad Phisol said the promotion was also being held as a result of positive feedback received by the organisation following the Tourism Langkawi products engagement mission in Phuket from July 19-22.

“The mission was very successful, Tourism Langkawi with Malindo Air received positive feedback on what we were able to offer as a result of the meeting with 25 travel agents there. Furthermore, we see Phuket as an attraction not only for Thai tourists but also from Europe and China,“ he said.

Meanwhile, Arasu Soundarajan said the airlines hoped the cooperation and the promotion would increase the number of passengers on its Langkawi-Phuket-Langkawi sector.

“We hope to push our load through this collaboration with the marketing support from Tourism Langkawi. Through this campaign, we can offer special fares to travel agents offering hotel packages,” he said.

Malindo Air has been offering flights for the Langkawi-Phuket-Langkawi sector every Monday, Wednesday and Friday since March.

Thailand is to ban smoking on some of the country's most popular tourist beaches, with the prospect of up to a year in prison for those caught lighting up, according to reports by local media.

The move follows a recent survey of litter on Patong beach, Phuket - visited by millions of foreign tourists each year - which found an average of 0.76 cigarette butts per square metre in a sample area, which would amount to 101,058 butts on the 2.5km-long stretch of sand.

The survey was undertaken by the country's department of marine and coastal resources, which described it as a "serious problem". Discarded cigarette butts accounted for a third of rubbish collected by the department.

"Cigarettes have a direct effect on the natural environment," director-general Jatuporn Buruspat told the Phuket Gazette .

"The butts clog the drains contributing to floods. When the cigarettes stay under the beach sand for a long time, it also negatively affects the ecosystem. And then when the chemicals from the cigarette butts reach the water, it also releases cadmium, lead, arsenic and some acid from insecticide which are poison to the natural food chain."

The ban, which will come into play in November, will affect 20 beaches including Patong, Koh Khai Nok, Koh Khai Nai (Phuket); Hua Hin, Cha-Am, Khao Takiab (western province of Prachuap Khiri Khan); Pattaya, Jomtien, Bangsaen (eastern province of Chonburi) and Samila (Songkhla city).

After a trial period, the ban is expected to be enforced on all Thai beaches, as well as on passenger and tourist boats, to tackle the problem of butts damaging the underwater environment.

Anyone found to be breaking the law will face one year in jail or a maximum 100,000 baht (S$4,080) fine, or both.

The Bangkok Post also reported the news, adding that Thailand has the sixth most rubbish-strewn areas of sea in the world.

Phuket’s captured croc sets off debate about tourism and wildlife

A three-metre-long saltwater crocodile found swimming off a beach on the resort island of Phuket last week, which is now in captivity after being caught last Friday, has become the unwitting talk of the town regarding maritime safety and its own immediate future.

Tourists have been warned to stay out of the water at Phuket’s northern beaches after the reptile was spotted in the sea on August 28.

The crocodile, which is believed to be male, was spotted at Mai Khao Beach and a tourist used a drone to take photos to prove its presence at the beach, which is heavily populated with hotels, resorts and tourists.

The photos of the crocodile at the busy beach subsequently hit the headlines in both the local and international media.

The attention led to the capture of the reptile last Friday and its transfer to a holding tank at a fishery centre in Thalang district last Friday, but the story did not end there.

Many members of the public have since taken to online media to make their opinions known after Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong took an interest in the animal, telling local media that the Fisheries Department would decide whether relevant authorities would provide care for it, possibly at an aquarium or zoo.

Although it is still unclear whether the animal had escaped from captivity or was raised in the wild, people have clamoured for its “return” to nature, including on the public advocacy website change.org, with 5,463 people signing a petition of support as of yesterday afternoon.

The public concern reached a crescendo after the media reported that the crocodile was refusing to eat, signalling that it was feeling stress in captivity, with animal lovers expressing their opinions on social networks, saying the site where it had been found was its habitat, which humans had encroached upon.

Sasin Chalermlarp, president of the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation conservation group, proposed that the crocodile be moved to a new location before it is returned to nature.

Rangsarit Kanjanavanit, a member of the same foundation, said the crocodile should not have been captured in the first place, adding that it could live harmoniously with humans.

“It’s important to preserve this rare saltwater crocodile and let it live freely.

It should be released back to the sea as soon as possible.”

Thon Thamrongnawasawat, a noted marine biologist, said there should be a serious discussion about the reptile’s safety before it is released into nature. “It would not be good if the crocodile is killed after returning to the sea.”

世界最大摩天轮将落户普吉

泰国商业发展公司、PAX GROUP公司和ANUPHAS GROUP公司联手将在普吉府建设世界最大摩天轮，希望能打造成为普吉府地标。

目前正在研究相关法律，预计2年内完工，之后还将考虑建设游乐园。

泰国商业发展有限公司董事长伊戈与PAX GROUP集团董事长瓦拉迪米于本月29日，在普吉府Grand Supicha City酒店召开「世界最高摩天轮项目」新闻发布会。

伊戈表示，在与PAX GROUP公司和ANUPHAS GROUP公司的领导人协商后，三方决定合作在普吉府建造世界最高摩天轮。

普吉府是世界知名的热门旅游城市，深受全球游客的喜欢，拥有美丽的自然风光，同时也具有独特的文化习俗，但3家公司经协商后认为，普吉府缺乏地标性建筑，因此认为投资该项目能大力促进当地旅游业发展，并计画以后在岛上投建大型游乐场。

伊戈还称，新加坡摩天轮是目前世界最高的摩天轮，高达165米，该项目完成后将打破此记录，预计将花费1年半时间建完，摩天轮将采用全透明玻璃观景舱，游客可360度观赏到普吉岛的风景，每个观景舱可容纳大约20人，对于恐高的人来说也是一种挑战。

目前3家公司正在与政府相关部门就该项目进行具体研究，在建设之前必须通过环境影响评估。

之前已经将该项目方案提交至普吉府府尹，各方对该项目表示赞同，因为该项目能吸引更多游客来到普吉旅游，为该府带来更多的经济效益。

印尼烟霾入侵泰国普吉岛，导致当地空气质量、能见度均有不同程度的下降，部分时段空气中灰尘含量超标，但该情况尚未影响到普吉机场航班的正常起降。普吉环保机构呼吁当地民众，早晨尽量不要外出锻炼，或进行长时间的户外活动。  

普吉府南部地区第15环保办事处昨天（27日）证实，受印尼山火影响，普吉岛出现轻微烟霾，上午7时测量到空气中灰尘含量达到145微克，超出120微克的标准数据。不久之后，空气质量出现好转。即便如此，还是提醒当地民众早晨不要到户外锻炼身体，或长时间呆在户外，以免引起呼吸系统不适。  

普吉府卡玛拉区、巴东区、卡图县、卡伦区、察隆区和市区，均出现不同程度的烟霾，部分民众外出一段时间后，眼睛和鼻子出现不适症状，尤其是卡玛拉、巴东、卡塔和卡伦区情况更加严重，烟雾浓度更大。  

普吉机场工作人员指出，目前的烟霾情况对机场航班起降没有造成影响，所有的进出港航班都正常起降。如果空气质量持续恶化，机场当局将根据实际情况及时通报航班变化。

打车神器Grab Taxi拟进驻普吉

东南亚最大的APP「打车神器」服务商Grab Taxi，计画开拓普吉计程车市场，这是Grab Taxi继曼谷、芭堤雅以及清莱之后瞄准的第4个城市，目的是让当地民众和游客可以更加容易召唤计程车，并享受更安全、更公平、更合法的打车服务。估计需要经过2-3个月的考察评估，之后即可决定是否在普吉府正式推出该服务。  

普吉府府尹、海军第3军区副司令、普吉府运输管理负责人、普吉地方警察总署副署长、Grab Taxi公司副总经理，于昨天（24日）在普吉美林酒店召开新闻发布会，就Grab Taxi准备在普吉府推出APP叫车服务市场调查，征询当地计程车、私家计程车合作意向等进行说明。

  府尹匿实表示，普吉府解决经济问题官民联合委员会经过讨论，决定推动普吉府计程车服务行业发展，为广大游客和当地民众提供更加优质的服务，让普吉的计程车服务达到规定的标准，同时吸引更多自由行客人到普吉旅游。目前该计画正在进行可行性调查评估过程中，同时与现有的计程车经营者进行沟通说明。  

Grab Taxi公司代表指出，该公司计画在普吉推出APP叫车项目得到普吉府官方的大力支持，而该公司在曼谷、芭堤雅和清莱取得的成功经验，让他们相信同样可以在普吉获得推广和发展，为游客和当地民众提供更加便利、安全、公平和优质的服务。目前已经有50多辆计程车有意加入该公司的叫车服务系统，而该公司的目标是争取让加入APP叫车服务的车辆超过100辆。  

普吉府计程车服务业落后、车辆不足、司机服务态度差、不打表随意叫价等问题突出，部分地区的计程车服务被少数当地人垄断，禁止其他车辆到所在区域载客，给游客出行带来诸多不便。

OTOP市集将亮相普吉 创收估300万

普吉府将于本月29日至8月4日，在Anuphas & Sons公司场地内举办「一镇一特产（OTOP）」市集活动，以此刺激泰国经济发展，并响应促进OTOP特产市场机制发展项目，推动旅游业获得持续性发展。本次活动预计可创收超过300万铢。  

普吉府尹尼实于24日上午10时半，在普吉直辖县达拉艾镇龙婆路主持OTOP特产市集新闻发布会，宣布将于本月29日至8月4日在Anuphas & Sons公司场地内举办该活动。

尼实表示，不管是过去的每一届政府，还是现任政府，从2001年起一直认真执行政府出台的OTOP特产推广政策，旨在创造就业机会、增加民众收入、促进学习当地文化、整合人力资源、开拓社区民众新思维等。  

他强调，普吉府十分重视当地OTOP特产的发展，包括每年投入大量预算用于新产品的开发与原有产品的推广，而本财政年度内普吉府针对OTOP特产市场机制促进发展项目，投入高达134万2600铢预算。项目涵盖3个活动，包括：1、展销来自经济自给自足社区的OTOP产品，投入预算40万铢；2、举办2015年普吉OTOP特色商品市集，投入80万铢预算；3、提升OTOP产品生产与市场发展潜力，投入14万2600铢。  

本次OTOP市集活动共持续长达7天，活动期间将展示和销售来自全国各地区的优质OTOP产品，整个活动现场将有120个展位，而产品的价格也相当公道，其中普吉府承包了50个展位。

活动期间每个晚上都会为民众及游客献上来自学生的文化艺术表演，可谓是夜夜都精彩。相信整场活动将会创造不低于300万铢的收入。

Honeymooning couples will be fast-tracked through immigration this month, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said yesterday. The initiative is to promote Thailand as a honeymoon destination and celebrate the spirit of Valentine's Day, a TAT spokeswoman said.

Couples arriving at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport or in Phuket during February will be able to get a commemorative ticket and cut the immigration queue. The capital's Don Mueang airport that serves low-cost and domestic airlines will not be part of the promotion.

Phuket and Penang become twin cities

Phuket Town and George Town in Penang, Malaysia, became official twin cities after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Phuket City Hall today.

Inspired by the two cities’ long-established historical relationship, the decision was seen as an important move in facilitating the exchange of expertise in areas of tourism, business and cultural heritage (story here).

“Both cities have agreed to establish a joint committee comprising government, business and civil society representatives which will oversee the implementation of projects, programs and activities,” said Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana.

“The committee will meet once a year in either Penang or Phuket and will cooperate in areas of city management and governance, trade, investment, social development, education and cultural heritage.”

The signing ceremony was also attended by Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut and Dato’ Patahiyah binti Ismail, president of the Municipal Council of Penang Island.

High costs and lack of demand has forced the operators of the Airport Express Bus service to push back the launch of its new route from Patong to Kata-Karon until at least October.

However, bus company chairman Prakob Panyawai is working on adding two more bus stops in Patong, Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO) chief Terayout Prasertphol confirmed to the Phuket Gazette today.

Mr Prakob initially planned for his “hop on, hop off” bus service to run from Phuket International Airport to Kata-Karon, but fear of violent reprisals from local tuk-tuk and taxi drivers necessitated terminating the route in Patong .

He later had revived his plan to roll out a new final stop in Karon by mid-August, after Col Somchai Ponatong of the Army’s 41st Military Circle promised to ensure the safety of the bus drivers and passengers (story here).

“We met with Mr Prakob earlier this week. He tested running the bus from Patong to Kata-Karon to see if it was worth it,” Mr Terayout said. “The answer was no. It costs too much because of the hills.”

Undaunted, Mr Prakob is working on how to make the service viable.

“He is trying to come up with a new plan to launch the service and make sure the company will not suffer by losing money,” Mr Terayout said.

Among the strategies under consideration are using a larger bus from the airport during peak passenger times, but using vans when there are fewer passengers.

“The finalized bus route, stops and travel times are set to be launched by the end of October,” explained Mr Terayout.

“However, the bus operators may need to focus more on improving their marketing, because not as many passengers are using the bus service as expected.”

Since the launch of the decades-in-waiting Airport Express Bus service in March last year (story here), the operators have revised the schedule several times to better target passengers.

The buses currently depart Patong for the airport nine times each day: the first bus leaves at 8am and the last one at 7pm. Meanwhile, the first bus departs the airport for Patong at 8:15am, while the last bus from the airport leaves at 8:45pm (timetable here).

The bus service also offers one of the cheapest – and safest – modes of transport on the island, both critical factors for all tourists and residents alike.

As agreed with the PLTO, the bus fares from Phuket Airport to the Boat Lagoon in Koh Kaew costs 60 baht, the Tesco Lotus shopping mall on the bypass road costs 80 baht, and all the way to Patong costs 120 baht. The same fares apply in the opposite direction (fares here).

In the Gazette poll last month, nearly 20 per cent of the 4,544 respondents voted that they were willing to pay “less than 300 baht” for a taxi fare from the airport to Patong, the cheapest option available in the poll.

The strongest call for the cheapest fares came from Thai nationals, with 34 per cent voting for “less than 300 baht”.
