Ancient Thai city is protected but still crumbling
Sprawling urban growth and water management problems are threatening conservation efforts at Thailand’s ancient city of Ayutthaya, experts say.
The Unesco World Heritage site located some 80km north of the capital, Bangkok, was once among the world’s wealthiest cities and a major trading port from the 14th to 18th centuries.
Today, the city attracts tourists from around the world who come to admire the ruins and stone Buddha statues at Ayutthaya, once the ancient capital of Thailand, then known as Siam.
However, poor urban planning and its impact on water management in the low-lying area pose a threat to the historic park, said Montira Horayangura Unakul, National Professional Officer with Unesco’s Culture Unit.
“Half the island is protected as a historic park and is also a world heritage site and the eastern half is where a lot of the modern development has taken place,” Montira said in an interview.
Rapid development has fuelled concern over the area’s capacity to defend against floods.

Devastating floods in Thailand in 2011, which killed more than 900 people and cost billions of dollars, hit Ayutthaya. Dozens of temples were inundated for weeks, although most suffered little damage.
“Once the waters receded there didn’t seem to be too much damage,” said Montira.
“However, after that we found residual effects for example to mural paintings.”

A lack of knowledge about traditional materials used at some sites is another problem that besets Ayutthaya and other heritage sites, including the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat temple complex in neighbouring Cambodia.
“An issue we are trying to address now is knowing what the ancient materials used in Ayutthaya were and what the composition of them was,” Montira said.
Thailand held an international conference, in collaboration with Unesco, in October to discuss conservation of brick monuments at the site.

Thailand marks the beginning of the Buddhist Lent with candle carving, merit-making and folk dancing
With the monsoon season now in full swing and the rains nourishing the delicate rice seeds sowed not so long ago, it's time for Thailand to mark the Khao Phansa Festival. Held across the country in the middle of July, this spiritual event sees devotees of the Buddhist faith offering beautifully carved candles to the temples in a gesture reminiscent of the days when the monks would use the candles to provide light as they chanted Buddhist texts throughout the night.
From Ubon Ratchathani to Nan provinces, from boats on the canals to rides on elephant-back, the festival is celebrated in many different ways with floats, cultural shows, folk music, traditional dance and parades forming the main theme.
We take a look at some of the most delightful candle festivals.
UBON RATCHATHANI
When: July 18-20
Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand's lower Northeast is the champion when it comes to candle carving and spectacular floats and parades. Tourists and devotees are lured to the provincial capital to admire the amazing wax and candle carvings, many of them shaped into Buddha images and angels. In more recent years, the festival has incorporated a candle contest, with international artists and college students competing to show off their artistic creations. This year's event kicked off at the beginning of this week and runs through July 20 with artists from Russia, the US, Taiwan and Spain exhibiting their works in Thungsrimuang square. A sightseeing tour of the candle-making communities of Wat Sripradoo, Wat Thungsrimuang and Wat Pholphaen allows visitors to watch as residents cut up and melt the beeswax then pour it into moulds to form components of the huge, elaborate candles. The event culminates on July 20 when thousands of spectators line the streets to witness the colourful candle float parade.
NAN
When: July 20
If extravagant candle floats are not your cup of tea, then check out the humble wax-offering rite in Wiang Sa, Nan Province. On July 20, two days after the full moon, residents of Wiang Sa district will offer small dice and sticks of candle and wax to the Buddhist monks at Wat Buen Yeun. Like almsgiving, this unique yet original candle offering has been an act of virtue since the early 1800s. With the monks staying in their temples for three months during the Buddhist Lent, the candles will be used for learning and practising Buddhism by night.
NAKHON PHANOM
When: July 20
Nakhon Phanom Candle Festival takes place at Phra That Phanom, one of the most revered pagodas along the Mekong River. As elsewhere in the country, the ceremony will be celebrated in a devout yet festive fashion. The colourful procession of exquisitely carved candles, Miss Candle Beauty Contest, classical dancing, a mass merit-making ceremony will take turns to brighten up the spirit of Khao Phansa on the river bank.
SURIN
When: July 18-19
Temple murals reveal a lot about the elephant's great contribution to Buddhism, and the pachyderms of Surin once again underline their important role in religion at the beginning of Vassa. Surin pays homage to its traditional beasts of burden with 100 elaborately decorated elephants carrying some of the city's most revered monks around the town in a unique and memorable ceremony. There's also a candle procession and an elephant-back merit-making rite at the Monument of Phaya Surin Phakdi Sri Narong Changwang.
SUPHAN BURI
July: 19-20
Suphan Buri Province holds its candle festival at Wat Pa Lelai Woravihara with a showcase of beautifully carved candles. The colourful procession along with performances of folk and traditional dance by local art students takes place on July 20 starting from the Clock Tower in Muang Suphan Buri District and continuing through the downtown area. The candle showcase and dance is staged at Wat Pa Lelai. Suphan Buri natives are famous for laying on good entertainment, so visitors to the festival won't be disappointed as folk dances add fun to the festival.
NAKHON RATCHASIMA
When: July 19-20
Nakhon Ratchasima Candle Procession Festival takes place at the Tao Suranaree Monument and promises a procession of floats bearing carved candles as well as a range of other merit-making activities. Ahead of the province's grand celebration, Phimai and Chokchai districts will hold the candle festivals to mark the start of the Buddhist Lent.
SARABURI
When: July 19-20
The annual Tak Bat Dok Mai, or Flower Offering festival, returns to Wat Phra Phutthabat in Saraburi to mark the beginning of the three-month-long rains retreat. Thousands of Buddhist monks, mostly from Phra Dhammakaya temple, are expected to attend this year’s event. The festival celebrates the bloom of the local flower known as Dok Khao Phansa at the beginning of Vassa. The flower offering takes place twice daily at 9am and 3pm on both July 19 and 20.
AYUTTHAYA
When: July 19
The riverside community of Ladchado, Ayutthaya Province, will be celebrating the annual Candle Festival along the river on July 19 and thanking the rain for replenishing its canal. Like many things in Ladchado, the candle festival is celebrated on the water with hundreds of small sampans decorated with flowers and colourful parasols making their way downstream from the far side of canal. Tucked away in Phak Hai district, Ladchado is about 40 kilometres west of downtown Ayutthaya.

清莱府黑庙工作人员、建造者亲属及清莱多名艺术家准备于11月13日为黑庙建造者及著名画家塔汪大师举行百日大祭，以纪念画家塔汪大师设计和建造独居艺术风格的黑庙。而近期清莱天气日渐凉爽，到黑庙观光的游客更是络绎不绝。
清莱府一白一黑两个艺术庙称为当地这几年名气较大的旅游景点，每年都吸引大量国内外游客前往观光，并对两座艺术寺庙的建筑艺术风格大加赞赏。黑庙建造者画家塔汪大师过世之后，一度有传闻黑庙将就此关闭。但近日其家属和黑庙工作人员均表示，黑庙将继续对外开放，并将于11月13日在黑庙内为塔汪大师举行百日祭奠活动，届时会有亲属、当地民众、清莱当地艺术家，乃至国家级艺术家到场悼念塔汪大师。
目前黑庙工作人员及塔兰大师的亲属正在对黑庙进行布置，为塔汪大师百日祭奠做准备。而在周末假期当中，有大量国内外游客到黑庙观光，因为目前清莱府天气日渐凉爽，国内各地民众都选择到清莱府旅游，体验当地凉爽的气候。而清莱之行黑庙是不可不去参观的景点。
清莱黑庙是国家级艺术大师塔汪大师发起、设计，历经40多年建造而成。黑庙建筑物以兰纳、澜沧，和素旺那普三种风格为主，整个黑庙占地面积38莱，有38栋以黑色为主题的艺术建筑。每天开放的时间为上午9时-12日，下午1时到5时。

Lanterns for the Lord Buddha
Lanna Dhutanka, a Buddhist Centre in Chiang Mai, will launch a mass release of lanterns to show a great respect to the Lord Buddha on the evening of October 25.
With thousands upon thousands of lanterns floating in the dark sky, this annual rite creates a sense of peace and harmony over San Sai district. The ceremony will start at 6.30 and wraps around 8.30.

This monastery is at Ban Pa Rai, Tambon Tung Pala, close to the railway (Hat Yai - Sungai Kolok route) between Na Pradu and Pa Rai Stations. It is located about 31 kilometres from Pattani town. By car, visitors can use highway no.42 (Pattani - Khok Pho), pass Na Ket Junction, then use highway no.409 (Pattani-Yala), pass Na Pradu Municipality and Wat Chang Hai Training Centre and turn to Wat Chang Hai for another 700 metres.
This old monastery was built for more than 300 years, with the sculpture of Luang Pu Tuad, once an abbot of the temple. Also, the architecture of stupa, chedi, temple, and bell tower are magnificently beautiful. Luang Pu Thuat, Wat Chang Hai, being respected by people all over the country, Luang Pu Thuat was an educational monk It was told that he was able to turn sea water into fresh water. Died in Malaysia, his body was brought back to Wat Chang Hai. The annual festival to pay respect to his bone and ashes is in April. At Wat Chang Hai, visitors can pay respect during 8am-5pm daily.

卫生厅厅长素贴昨天（17日）透露，九皇斋节即将到来，民众在选购或制作斋食时一定要注意4点，保证在9天节日内既吃得开心，又吃得健康。
素贴指出，无论是自己制作还是向外面的摊贩购买斋食，或者民众自己制作销售，都要注意以下4点：1、清洗，将家里的烹饪器材包括锅碗瓢盆清洗干净，还要保证购买回来的食材清洗清洁卫生；2、佐料适量，在烹饪食物或拌制沙拉时，要适量搭配的材料，口味适中，太甜、太咸、太油都会身体不好；3、饮食节制，避免吃油炸、烧烤的食物，这些食物不仅容易增肥，还有引起癌细胞病变的危险；4、正确选择食物，平常没有吃斋习惯的民众连续数日吃斋，容易导致身体营养不平衡，为了均衡营养，民众可以选择多吃豆类，例如豆腐、黄豆、五谷杂粮等。
素贴还表示，吃斋对于「无肉不欢」的民众来说，对毅力是一种考验，民众可以通过其他方法分散注意力，例如到好的餐厅吃斋、出去旅游，或者干脆忘记吃肉这件事。在购买食物时，一定要以安全、卫生为基本准则，千万不要随便在路边摊购买。吃斋节过后，民众不要立即大鱼大肉，因为连续数日不吃肉，体内的消化系统无法立即适应，民众可以先少吃，给身体提供慢慢适应的时间。

泰国白龙王17日病逝，白龙王庙卢师兄今天表示，白龙王9月1日出殡，之后庙里是否取消问事，「要等出殡后才可以说」。而近两天，白龙王的信徒也纷纷赶往其庙宇，其中包括许多香港影星。
外界传闻白龙王可能由小女儿或二弟子接班，但白龙王家人表示，白龙王只有一个，没有接班人。卢师兄强调，白龙王没有接班人，他将于9月1日下午出殡，安葬于庙内，白龙王庙未来也会在每周五、六、日开放。这段时间白龙王庙会对外开放，直到白龙王出殡当天，开放时间为每天上午8时到晚上9时，供信徒悼念。至于信徒未来还能不能向庙内问事、请求指点迷津，卢师兄说，「要等出殡之后才可以说」，庙方将在白龙王出殡后召开记者会宣布。
据悉，本名周钦南的白龙王是潮州华裔泰国人，他因支气管问题久病不愈，17日病逝，享寿76岁，由于港台众多艺人梁朝伟、曾志伟、舒淇等是白龙王的虔诚信徒，他在两岸三地、星马等华人圈也因此声名大响。
据报导，白龙王病逝第二天，吸引大批善信前往祭拜。香港导演刘伟强已飞往泰国，18日上午现身白龙王庙的灵堂，看见师母后即轻抱安慰，期间双眼通红。当天傍晚，曾志伟也一身素服现身灵堂。当师母出现时，曾志伟主动上前并双膝跪地，师母见状抱着曾志伟的头，一脸哀伤。
刚从美国完成电影「一代宗师」宣传返港的梁朝伟，得知「白龙王」病逝后表现难过。他说，感谢「白龙王」十几年对他人生教诲，希望「白龙王」安息。灵堂中央位置摆放一张「白龙王」含烟斗的照片，神坛四周摆满弟子的花圈，当中有艺人任贤齐、舒淇、王晶夫妇、孟瑶等。白龙王经常为人「指点迷津」和「祈福」，香港不少人艺人都是他的信徒，包括成龙、王晶、文隽、谭咏麟、梁朝伟等。

外界传闻白龙王可能由小女儿或二弟子接班，但白龙王家人表示，白龙王只有一个，没有接班人。卢师兄强调，白龙王没有接班人，他将于9月1日下午出殡，安葬于庙内，白龙王庙未来也会在每周五、六、日开放。这段时间白龙王庙会对外开放，直到白龙王出殡当天，开放时间为每天上午8时到晚上9时，供信徒悼念。至于信徒未来还能不能向庙内问事、请求指点迷津，卢师兄说，「要等出殡之后才可以说」，庙方将在白龙王出殡后召开记者会宣布。
据悉，本名周钦南的白龙王是潮州华裔泰国人，他因支气管问题久病不愈，17日病逝，享寿76岁，由于港台众多艺人梁朝伟、曾志伟、舒淇等是白龙王的虔诚信徒，他在两岸三地、星马等华人圈也因此声名大响。
据报导，白龙王病逝第二天，吸引大批善信前往祭拜。香港导演刘伟强已飞往泰国，18日上午现身白龙王庙的灵堂，看见师母后即轻抱安慰，期间双眼通红。当天傍晚，曾志伟也一身素服现身灵堂。当师母出现时，曾志伟主动上前并双膝跪地，师母见状抱着曾志伟的头，一脸哀伤。
刚从美国完成电影「一代宗师」宣传返港的梁朝伟，得知「白龙王」病逝后表现难过。他说，感谢「白龙王」十几年对他人生教诲，希望「白龙王」安息。灵堂中央位置摆放一张「白龙王」含烟斗的照片，神坛四周摆满弟子的花圈，当中有艺人任贤齐、舒淇、王晶夫妇、孟瑶等。白龙王经常为人「指点迷津」和「祈福」，香港不少人艺人都是他的信徒，包括成龙、王晶、文隽、谭咏麟、梁朝伟等。

Ubon Ratchathani marks the start of the Buddhist Lent retreat with its annual Candle Festival.
The month-long festive event, which this year is on the theme "Isaan Art and Culture", brings the finest arts of Isaan to Ubon Ratchathani's public park. The international wax carving competition also adds a foreign shade to the local colour palette, with many international artists showing off their artistic skills. The highlight is on July 22, when more than 100,000 devotees will join a procession of carved candles on floats. A sightseeing tour of the eight candle-making communities is a must.

泰国旅游局来兴府【Tak】办事处主任素林昨天（31日）表示，该办事处准备推出多个路线「拜佛游」，吸引国民在观光淡季期间，更多到该府旅游，探访多元民俗文化，并以弘扬佛教为主题，让佛教善信体验返璞归真的乡间礼佛之乐。
素林表示，来兴府地处泰国北部，与缅甸接壤，是一座拥有多元民俗特色的观光府治，不仅大自然景点丰富，而且拥有大量的与佛教文化相关的景点，例如拉恒佛寺等等。素林指出，该办事处将让游客体验当地丰富多彩的乡村生活风情，泰缅边境风光、周边府区风景名胜等。同时还可以传承艺术、文化和当地寺庙的历史。在游览过程中和朋友家人一同做功德祈福。整个游览行程从石景山寺庙开始，该寺庙的特色是在寺庙内有修建在石头上的佛塔，以及圆寂高僧长期不朽之躯体。
在参观石头上的佛塔之后，还可以继续前往参观泰国团结寺，寺庙位于当地首个旅游开发村内，膜拜「及时应验祖师佛」，参观木刻博物馆，欣赏当地技师精湛的雕刻技术，选购各种工艺品。接着参观哇塔拉兰寺，膜拜缅式佛寺的佛祖。此外还可以到玛尼派颂寺膜拜銮帕多大佛像，该寺庙内塔上塔，在主塔上有233座小塔，塔内有佛像51万2028尊。在整个7天活动当中都可以参观当地的寺庙和拜佛做功德。
素林表示，举办游览来兴府各大寺庙拜佛之旅，旨在促进当地的旅游业发展，因为到当地旅游不但可以体验来兴府与缅甸接壤的多元文化，还可以观赏到当地的秀奇风光，以及不同的文化艺术特征。此次活动将于6月21-23日进行。
